The gaming giant aims to utilize AI-generated art to fill out their worlds. Will this result in even more layoffs in the gaming industry?
Blizzard has recently revealed a patent allowing them to emulate the process of illustration using AI. The AI system will generate artwork that follows a certain style to be used in their games. The controversial decision is still in its early stages. The patent will be fully tested to see if it’s feasible.
The AI software follows a very simple concept that makes it easy for designers to generate artwork. The text used in a generation is simple and plain, but the system can be adjusted through pattern recognition to create a certain style to match the required output.
The AI software will first generate an image to match the input text using images that already exist. Then these structured images will be used to create a texture using the machine. Afterward, these textures would be then combined with moderate amounts of detail to create a complete artwork.
We believe this method will allow designers to easily create artwork compared to the traditional method. The fantasy worlds will be larger and more illustrious as the process of content creation is more efficient.
There are a few legal limitations in the concept as well. Blizzard has to initialize their AI generation software using images and artwork that already exist. It should be taken into account that most of these materials would be copyright protected, which makes the entire process a violation of several copyright laws.
